Folklorists work with oral texts and these are most often collected as sound files.  Folklorists also collect large volumes of data which must then be processed.  Typical processing involves transcription, but this is laborious and time-consuming.  One solution to this problem is substituting indexing for transcription, a process which actually offers the advantages of context and ready availability of sound.  See http://projects.tapor.ualberta.ca/UkraineAudio/. This website is a good research tool, but it is not easy for the general public to use.  To involve the community in research, we have developed http://research.artsrn.ualberta.ca/ukrfolklore/index.html, a site that works like a Wiki, allowing anyone with internet access to transcribe and/or translate selected files.  Our paper will present this website and discuss the issues that arise when the community is involved in the academic enterprise.
